How Instagram engagement rate works
Count four interactions
Likes, comments, shares and saves, all listed in the post's insights. Shares and saves are the strongest signs someone valued the post, so never leave them out.
Divide by reach
Reach (Instagram now calls it Viewers) is the number of accounts that saw the post. Dividing by it judges the post itself; dividing by followers mixes in everyone who never saw it.

Mydrop data
What is a good Instagram engagement rate? 3.08% is the median.
We measured 2,901 Instagram posts on accounts connected to Mydrop, over 180 days to September 2026. Each rate is the post's likes, comments, shares and saves divided by its reach.
- Half of all Instagram posts on Mydrop earned between 1.06% and 6.71% of their reach: a 4% post is a good post, not a great one.
- Saturday posts did 6% better than the account's typical post and Sunday posts 3% worse. Every other weekday sat level.
- Posts published between midnight and 6 am earned 36% less, the biggest timing effect in the data. If your scheduler fills night slots, move them.

Every Instagram number, and where to find it
What each number in the formula means, and where Instagram shows it for a post.
| Number | Where Instagram shows it | In the formula |
|---|---|---|
| Likes | Under the post, and in View insights > Interactions | Counted |
| Comments | Under the post, and in View insights > Interactions | Counted |
| Shares | View insights > Interactions | Counted |
| Saves | View insights > Interactions | Counted |
| Reach (Viewers) | View insights: the unique accounts that saw the post | Divide by it |
| Views | View insights: every time the post was shown, repeats included | Not used: repeat views inflate it |
| Followers | Your profile | Divide by it only for a public, quick comparison |
Since 2024 Instagram counts Views (every time the post is shown, repeats included) instead of impressions, and calls the unique accounts Viewers. Instagram shows no engagement rate itself: interactions ÷ viewers × 100 is the formula Mydrop uses.

Instagram engagement rate, answered
Add the post's likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by its reach, and multiply by 100. 395 interactions on a reach of 9,800 is a 4.03% engagement rate.
By reach to judge a post, since only the accounts that saw it could engage. By followers to compare public accounts, such as creators for a brand deal, because anyone can see a follower count but only the owner sees reach.
Open the post and tap View insights. Instagram now calls reach Viewers: the unique accounts that saw the post. Interactions lists its likes, comments, shares and saves.
No. Instagram shows views, viewers and interactions, but no rate. Interactions divided by viewers, times 100, is the standard formula and the one Mydrop uses.
Morning, afternoon and evening did the same on Mydrop. Only the night stood out: posts published between midnight and 6 am earned 36% less than the account's typical post.
