How social media text formatting works
Posts are plain text
Social networks have no bold or italic button in posts. Styled text is made of Unicode letters that look bold or italic, so it survives the paste.
Each network counts it its own way
On X a styled letter counts as 2, on TikTok as 2, on Instagram and LinkedIn as 1. Pick the network above and the counter uses its rule.
Accents stay plain
Unicode has styled forms for A to Z and 0 to 9 only. Letters such as é, ñ or ü stay regular inside a styled word.
Example: “Big news” = 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 in bold
Styles use Unicode's Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols. Counting rules checked on October 11, 2026.

On some networks. X counts each styled letter as 2 and TikTok as 2; Instagram, LinkedIn and Bluesky as 1. The counter in the tool uses the rule of the network you pick.
It can be. Some screen readers skip styled letters, others spell each one out. Style a few words, never a whole post, and never your name or a link.
Unicode only has styled versions of A to Z and 0 to 9. Accented letters, other alphabets and emoji stay as you typed them.
