How engagement rate is calculated
By reach: the fair one
Engagements ÷ people who saw the post × 100. Followers who never saw it are left out, so small and big accounts compare fairly. Mydrop uses it on Instagram and Facebook.
By views: for video
TikTok, YouTube, Reels and Threads report views, so the rate is engagements ÷ views × 100. Mydrop uses it on TikTok and YouTube.
By followers: the quick one
Engagements per post ÷ followers × 100. Anyone can work it out from a public profile, which is why brand deals use it, but it runs lower on big accounts.
Example: “240 likes, 18 comments, 6 shares and 12 saves on a reach of 6,900” = 4.00% engagement rate by reach

Mydrop data
What is a good engagement rate? The median post, network by network.
We measured 4,785 posts with engagement data on 336 accounts connected to Mydrop, over 180 days to September 2026. Each rate is the network's own: engagements divided by reach on Instagram and Facebook, by views on TikTok and YouTube.
- The median Instagram post earned 3.08% of its reach. The middle half of posts sat between 1.06% and 6.71%.
- Facebook runs lowest: a median 1.11% of reach, with reactions and comments counted.
- Profiles that posted 7 or more times a week had a median rate of 0.68%, against 3.08% at 1 to 3 posts a week. That is a correlation, not a cause: smaller accounts post less and carry higher rates.

Networks change what they report. Use the same formula every month for a client, and compare a post with the account's own average before you compare it with anyone else.
