How Pinterest engagement rate works

Saves and clicks, not likes

Pinterest counts saves, Pin clicks (opening the Pin) and outbound clicks (going to your site) as engagements. Reactions and comments are not part of its rate.

Divide by impressions

An impression is each time the Pin was shown on screen. Pinterest Analytics divides by impressions, so use the same base to match it.

Watch the outbound clicks

For a brand, outbound clicks are the visits a Pin sends to the website. Pinterest shows their own rate next to the engagement rate: report both.

Example: “A Pin with 12,500 impressions, 140 saves, 210 Pin clicks and 65 outbound clicks” = 3.32% engagement rate by impressions

Formula from Pinterest's help on Pinterest Analytics. Page checked on October 11, 2026.

On some formats Pinterest also counts carousel swipes and collection clicks as engagements. If your Pin is a carousel, add the swipes to Pin clicks to match Pinterest's figure.
