1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait) is the best size for the feed. Instagram also takes 1080 × 1080 squares, 1080 × 566 landscape images, and, from the app, 1080 × 1440 (3:4).

How to size images for Instagram
4:5 is the feed size
1080 × 1350 takes the most room in the feed of any size Instagram's publishing API accepts (4:5 to 1.91:1), so it works from the app and from scheduling tools alike.
3:4 fits the new grid
Since 2025 the profile grid shows tall 3:4 tiles, and the app accepts 1080 × 1440 uploads. Tools posting through the API may crop a 3:4 photo back to 4:5.
Stories and Reels need a safe zone
At 1080 × 1920, keep text out of the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side, where Instagram puts the profile, buttons and caption.
Example: “A 4,032 × 3,024 phone photo for an Instagram post” = a 2,419 × 3,024 centre crop, saved at 1,080 × 1,350
Sizes checked on October 10, 2026, against Instagram's help centre and its publishing API.
Instagram size guide
Every Instagram image size for 2026
The upload size for each Instagram format, and what to know before you post.
| Format | Size (px) | Ratio | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portrait post | 1,080 × 1,350 | 4:5 | The best feed size. Instagram's publishing API takes 4:5 to 1.91:1, JPEG, up to 8 MB. |
| Tall portrait | 1,080 × 1,440 | 3:4 | Matches the 3:4 profile grid. The app takes it; the API may crop it to 4:5. |
| Square post | 1,080 × 1,080 | 1:1 | Shows whole in the feed; the 3:4 grid trims its left and right edges. |
| Landscape post | 1,080 × 566 | 1.91:1 | The smallest image in the feed: use it only when the subject is wide. |
| Story or Reel | 1,080 × 1,920 | 9:16 | Stories and Reels. Keep text out of the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side. |
| Profile picture | 320 × 320 | 1:1 | Shown as a circle: keep the face or logo in the middle. |
Carousels take their ratio from the first image: size every slide the same. Instagram accepts up to 20 items in a carousel posted from the app.

1080 × 1920 pixels (9:16). Keep text and logos out of the top 14% and the bottom 35% of the frame, where Instagram shows the profile, buttons and caption.
1080 × 1440 pixels. Since 2025 the profile grid shows 3:4 tiles, so a 3:4 photo fills its tile without trimming. Scheduling tools that post through Instagram's API may crop it to 4:5.
Because its ratio is outside what Instagram shows in the feed (4:5 to 1.91:1), or because the grid shows a 3:4 tile. Resize it here to the exact format first.
320 × 320 pixels or larger, square. Instagram shows it as a circle, so keep the face or logo centred.
