Finance leaders don't want a dashboard full of likes. They want three things: what social cost, what revenue it brought in, and how sure you are. The fastest way to get a yes is one page with a full cost figure, revenue split into three confidence tiers, and a low-to-high range.
TLDR: Count every cost (ads, creators, tools, labour), tag every link using the same naming rules, split revenue into tracked, assisted and self-reported, and present a range. A CFO trusts a range with its caveats stated far more than one confident number.
Step 1: Count the full cost before finance does
If you report only ad spend, finance will add the rest and your ROI will look worse than theirs. Add it up yourself, in one table.
- Media spend: paid social and boosted posts.
- Creator and agency fees: anyone you paid to make or post content.
- Tools: scheduling, analytics, design, listening.
- Labour: hours spent on social multiplied by a loaded hourly cost. Ask finance for the rate.
Labour is usually the biggest line for teams that lean on organic, and it's the one most reports skip.
Step 2: Tag every link with the same rules
Attribution falls apart at the link, not in the report. Agree one naming scheme and write it down:
- Source: the platform, in lowercase (
instagram,linkedin). - Medium: one of
organic,paid,influencer,email-signature. - Campaign: a name picked from a shared list, never typed freehand.
Freehand names are why one campaign turns up as five rows in analytics. If your data is already messy, fixing UTM data gaps is the first job.
Step 3: Split revenue into three tiers
Don't lump everything into one number. Label how you know each pound came from social.
| Tier | How you know | Confidence | How to label it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tracked | A tagged click led to a purchase or a form fill in analytics or the CRM | High | "Directly attributed" |
| Assisted | Social was an earlier touch on the path to a sale that closed elsewhere | Medium | "Social assisted" |
| Self-reported | Customer picked social on a "How did you hear about us?" field | Medium | "Customer says social" |
The self-reported tier matters because it catches dark social: links shared in DMs and group chats that arrive with no tag. Our dark-social leak audit shows how to size it.
Step 4: Show a range and one comparison
Your low case is tracked revenue only. Your high case is all three tiers, with any overlap you can identify removed. Put both on the page.
Then compare cost per customer on social against cost per customer on one channel finance already trusts, such as search or email. That puts social in the language the budget meeting is already speaking.
The questions finance will ask
Prepare these answers before the meeting.
| Question | What to have ready |
|---|---|
| Would they have bought anyway? | Say it plainly. If you can, pause one paid campaign in one region for two weeks and compare against a region that kept running. |
| Is the cost fully loaded? | Show the four cost lines from Step 1. |
| What is not counted? | Brand awareness, retention and support savings. List them as "not measured", not as zero. |
| Does this hold quarter to quarter? | Show the last three quarters side by side with the same rules. |
A sample one-page layout
Keep the page to six rows, one quarter per column:
| Row | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Total cost | Media, creators, tools and labour, shown as four lines |
| Tracked revenue | Tagged clicks that ended in a sale |
| Assisted revenue | Sales where social was an earlier touch |
| Self-reported revenue | Customers who named social as the source |
| Range | Low case and high case, side by side |
| Not measured | Awareness, retention, support savings |
If a cell is empty because the data doesn't exist yet, write "not tracked". An honest gap builds more trust than an estimate nobody can check.
The social half of the ROI page, filled in automatically
Mydrop covers the social side of this page. Performance analytics put every profile's reach, engagement and per-platform metrics in one view, and white-label PDF reports can go out on a schedule, so finance gets the same numbers on the same day each month.
Mydrop doesn't see your revenue. Sales and customer data still come from your analytics tool or CRM, and the three tiers above are how you join the two together.
Next step: build the one-page sheet this week with only three rows (cost, tracked revenue, self-reported revenue). Add the assisted tier once the first two hold up. If you report across several brands, start free with Mydrop to pull the social numbers into one report.
