How to plan an Instagram grid
The grid is 3:4 now
Since 2025 the profile grid shows tall 3:4 tiles. A 4:5 post loses a thin strip on each side; a square loses an eighth on each side.
Newest goes top-left
Every new post pushes the whole grid one cell along. Post the bottom-right photo of your plan first and the top-left one last.
Plan in rows of 3
Post 1 or 2 photos and every column below shifts. Post in threes and the rows you already have keep their place.
Example: 6 new posts planned above your current 9 = 2 new rows, posted bottom-right first; your 9 move down 2 rows
Grid shape checked on 21 October 2026.

What the 3:4 grid shows of each post
Instagram centres each post in a 3:4 tile on your profile. Here is what stays visible, format by format.
| Format | Upload size (px) | Shown in the grid | Trimmed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grid tile (3:4) | 1080 × 1440 | 1080 × 1440 | Nothing |
| Portrait post (4:5) | 1080 × 1350 | 1013 × 1350 | 34 px on the left and right |
| Square post (1:1) | 1080 × 1080 | 810 × 1080 | 135 px on the left and right |
| Landscape post (1.91:1) | 1080 × 566 | 425 × 566 | 328 px on the left and right |
| Reel (9:16) | 1080 × 1920 | 1080 × 1440 | 240 px at the top and bottom |
| Carousel | Its first slide's size | The first slide only | As its first slide |
Visible areas are computed for a centred 3:4 tile. Grid posts made in Mydrop use 1080 × 1350 tiles, the tallest size Instagram's publishing API takes, so keep faces and words at least 34 px from each tile's left and right edges.

Bottom-right first, top-left last. Instagram puts your newest post top-left, so the photo you want there goes out last. The numbers on each planned photo show that order.
Yes. Up to 3 pinned posts sit at the start of your grid, before your newest post. Plan the rest of the feed around them.
Yes. The Mydrop CSV holds one dated draft per photo, in posting order. Import it in Mydrop's Bulk Posts and add each photo there, since a CSV cannot carry images.
Carousels. On accounts connected to Mydrop, carousels earned 10% more engagement than the account's typical post over 180 days to September 2026. In the grid, a carousel shows its first slide.
