1080 × 1350 pixels (4:5 portrait) is the best feed size. Instagram also takes 1080 × 1440 (3:4) since 2025, 1080 × 1080 square and 1080 × 566 landscape.

How to size images for social media
4:5 works everywhere
A 1080 × 1350 portrait shows uncropped in the Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X feeds, and through scheduling tools. It is the safest single size.
9:16 needs a safe zone
Stories, Reels, TikTok and Shorts cover the top and bottom with buttons and captions. Meta's guide says keep text out of the top 14% and bottom 35%.
Upload the exact size
When the file matches the format, the network does not crop or rescale it, so faces and text stay where you put them.
Example: “A 4032 × 3024 phone photo for an Instagram portrait post” = a 2,419 × 3,024 centre crop, saved at 1,080 × 1,350
Sizes checked on October 10, 2026, against each network's help centre and developer docs.
Mydrop data
Which format earns more? Carousels lead.
We scored 4,833 posts on accounts connected to Mydrop against each account's typical post, over 180 days to September 2026.
- Carousels earned 10% more engagement than the account's typical post (749 posts).
- Single photos and videos sat level with the typical post, so the format alone will not save a weak idea.
- A carousel takes its ratio from the first image: size every slide the same, 1080 × 1350 for a portrait carousel.
