How to tag Facebook links
Posts, comments and ads
Links are clickable in Page posts, in comments and in ads. Tag the link in the post; if a Page's link posts are limited, put the tagged link in the first comment.
Facebook's link shim is fine
Facebook opens outside links through l.facebook.com, a safety check that hides which page the click came from. Your UTM tags are what tell GA4 the visit came from Facebook.
Organic and paid apart
Use utm_medium=social for Page posts and a paid medium such as paid-social for ads. facebook is on GA4's social list, so they land in Organic and Paid Social.
Example: A Page post linking to a spring offer = https://example.com/spring?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spring-sale

Where links work on Facebook, and how to tag them
Every place a link can sit on Facebook, whether people can click it, and the tag to give it.
| Where the link sits | Clickable? | Tag to add |
|---|---|---|
| Page posts | Clickable | utm_medium=social |
| Comments, including the first comment | Clickable | utm_content=first-comment |
| Reels captions | Clickable | utm_content=reel |
| Page buttons and About | Clickable | utm_content=page-button |
| Ads | Clickable | utm_medium=paid-social |
In December 2025 Meta began testing a cap of about 2 link posts a month for Pages without Meta Verified; links in comments were not affected. If your Page is in the test, the first comment is the place for the tagged link.

facebook, in lowercase. It is on GA4's list of social sites and it is the source Mydrop's campaigns write.
In the post, unless your Page is limited on link posts. Then put it in the first comment with utm_content=first-comment, so you can compare the two.
Give ads a paid medium, such as paid-social, and posts the medium social. GA4 then files them under Paid Social and Organic Social.
