Most wasted influencer budget comes down to the same thing: nobody agreed, before the post went live, what number would count as a win. Sort that out and tracking gets simple. Track five numbers for every creator, in the same sheet, and decide whether to renew or cut 30 days after each post.
TLDR: Give each creator their own link and keyword, then record clicks, keyword comments, saves, cost per result and a 30-day recheck. Renew the creators whose cost per result is at or below your target, and cut the rest.
Set the target before you pay anyone
Write one sentence per campaign: "A good result is [action] at or below [cost]." The action can be a purchase, a signup or a click to a product page. If you can't name it, you're buying reach, and reach doesn't show up as ROI.
The five numbers, per creator
| # | Number | Where it comes from | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Link clicks | A unique tagged link per creator | Did the audience act at all |
| 2 | Keyword comments | Comments with a campaign word ("GUIDE") | Intent, and it works where links are limited |
| 3 | Saves and shares | The creator's post insights (ask for a screenshot) | Whether the content was worth keeping |
| 4 | Cost per result | Fee plus product cost, divided by results | The only number you can compare across creators |
| 5 | 30-day recheck | Same link and code, a month later | Whether the post kept working or spiked and died |
Ask each creator for insights screenshots at day 7 and day 30. Put that in the contract, because it's hard to ask for afterwards.
Give every creator their own link and code
A shared link tells you the campaign worked. A unique link per creator tells you which creator worked. Add a creator-specific discount code too, since people copy the code and skip the link.
Tag links with the same naming rules every time (source, medium, campaign, creator). When the names drift, the report breaks.
Use a keyword for the platforms that block links
Instagram captions don't carry clickable links, and plenty of people never leave the app. Ask the creator to end with "comment GUIDE and I'll send it". Each keyword comment is a counted, intentional action.
In Mydrop, trigger-word comment automation can reply to those comments with the link, so the creator doesn't have to answer by hand and you get a clean count of who asked.
Compare creators on cost per result
Divide everything you paid a creator by their results. Then rank them. The creator with 200,000 followers and a $2,000 fee can lose to a creator with 8,000 followers and a $150 fee. That ranking is the whole point of tracking.
Be careful with small samples. One purchase isn't a trend. If a creator drove fewer than about ten results, treat the number as a hint and test them once more before you decide.
Check what changed on your own accounts
Creator posts can lift your own profile. During the campaign window, compare your follower growth, profile visits and brand mentions with the week before. Mydrop's analytics show those per profile, and social monitoring catches mentions of your brand from people you never briefed.
Mydrop tracks the accounts you connect. A creator's own insights still have to come from the creator.
Three mistakes that waste the budget
- Paying before agreeing the target. If the result isn't defined, every outcome can be called a success.
- Judging by views. Views are cheap to buy and easy to inflate. Clicks, keyword comments and purchases are harder to fake.
- Skipping the insights clause. Without screenshots in the contract, creators often send nothing once the post is live, and you can't tell why a post flopped.
One more habit helps: write down what you'd change for the next creator. After three campaigns, that list becomes your brief.
The renew-or-cut rule
At day 30, sort creators by cost per result:
- At or below target: renew and ask for a second format.
- Within 50% above target: one more test with a better brief.
- Far above target: cut, and note why (wrong audience, weak call to action, weak product fit).
Next step: build the five-column sheet now and fill in the target sentence before the next contract goes out.
