When to Repurpose a Top Post: 4 Triggers and a Wait Time

Repurpose a post when it beats your median by 1.5x, covers an evergreen topic and has rested four weeks. Four triggers, three stop signs and a table.

Word cloud of marketing terms around a glowing lightbulb

Repurpose a post when it beats your own median by at least 1.5x, covers a topic that will still be true in three months, and has rested for about four weeks. If any of those is missing, make something new instead. You can apply this rule to any post in about two minutes.

TLDR: Four triggers say "reuse it": it beat your median by 1.5x, it is evergreen, it has rested four weeks, and it suits a new format or platform. Three stop signs say "leave it": a paid boost caused the result, it is date-bound, or the comments show confusion.

Trigger 1: it beat your own median by 1.5x

Sort your last 30 posts by engagement and divide each one by your median. Anything at 1.5x or higher is a candidate. The 1.5x line is a rule of thumb we use, not a law: on a small account, set the bar higher.

Use your median because it is the only fair baseline. In Mydrop's data, the median Instagram engagement rate was 3.1% and the middle half of posts ran from 1.1% to 6.7%, so a "good" number varies a lot from one account to the next.

Trigger 2: the topic is still true in three months

A how-to, a checklist, a mistake list or a customer story ages well. A sale, an event or a news reaction does not. If the post needs a date to make sense, it's not a repurposing candidate.

Trigger 3: it has rested four weeks

On the same platform, wait about four weeks so most of your followers have forgotten the original. On a different platform, there is no wait: a LinkedIn post can become an Instagram carousel the same week.

Trigger 4: you have a new format to put it in

Repurposing means changing the packaging. In Mydrop's data, carousels ran 10% above the account's typical post, while photos and videos sat at the median. So a text post that worked is worth turning into a carousel, and a carousel that worked is worth turning into a 30-second video.

Three stop signs

  • A boost caused the result. If you paid to promote it, the numbers do not tell you about the content.
  • One big account shared it. A one-off share is luck, not a pattern.
  • The comments show confusion. Lots of "what does this mean?" means the post reached people but did not land.

Decision table: reuse, revise or leave

What you see Decision Move
1.5x median, evergreen, over 4 weeks old Reuse Same idea, new format
1.5x median, time-bound Leave Write a fresh version next season
1.0x to 1.5x, evergreen Revise Test a new hook on the same idea
Under 1.0x Leave Do not repurpose a miss
Strong on one platform, never posted elsewhere Reuse now Adapt to the second platform this week

If you need a scoring layer on top, the repurposing-signal scorecard turns these triggers into points. For the broader question of repurposing versus new work, read when to repurpose versus create fresh content.

Find your candidates in one view

The tedious part is the comparison against the median. Mydrop's performance analytics shows each post against that account's own median across profiles, so your 1.5x list is a sort, not a spreadsheet. When you spot one, create a new draft in the calendar from the same idea, change the format and schedule it in a rested slot.

Turn one winning checklist into three posts

Say a seven-point checklist post beat your median at 1.8x. You can reuse it three ways without repeating yourself: a carousel that gives one point per slide, a short video on the single point that drew the most comments, and a text post that asks which of the seven readers use. Each one is a new hook on a proven idea, and each can go to a different platform on a different day.

Put a four-week reminder on every winner

Make this a habit: on the first of each month, pull the top three posts from four to eight weeks ago and run them through the four triggers. Most months you will reuse one and leave two.

Start now: open your last 30 posts, mark everything at 1.5x median or higher, then strike out the time-bound ones. What is left is next week's content. If you manage several accounts, start free with Mydrop so the median comparison is built in.

FAQ

Quick answers

About four weeks on the same platform, so most followers have moved on. On a different platform you can repurpose the same week.

Compare it to your own median reach and engagement, not to another account. A post at 1.5x your median or higher is a strong candidate.

No. Reposting republishes the same file. Repurposing keeps the idea but changes the format, hook or platform, so the post is new to the people who see it.

Next step

Stop coordinating around the work

If your team spends more time chasing approvals, assets, and publish details than creating better posts, the problem is probably not your people. It is the workflow around them. Mydrop brings planning, review, scheduling, and performance into one calmer operating system.

Managing 14+ social platforms felt like a 2 a.m. nightmare until Mydrop. The AI brand-voice mapping is scary accurate, and the client approval portal saved me easily 15 hours this week alone. It's the ultimate set-and-forget workspace for busy agencies.
A true automation tool for scheduling (and creating) social media content! It has saved me over 20 hours of work already in just my first couple weeks. A true game-changer for anyone in business, big or small!
Finally tried Mydrop on a test client and the white-label portal on a custom domain actually looks legit, no Mydrop branding sneaking in. The OAuth setup saved me from the usual “what's my password” back-and-forth.
