Reach on your best posts usually fades after about three weeks, and there are seven possible reasons. Five of them cost nothing to fix. The first step is to tell a real drop from normal variation, then work through the other six causes in order.
TLDR: Compare your last ten posts to the ten before, using your own median. If the median fell, work through the table below: timing, format, repetition, a link in the caption, a short caption, a connection problem, or a topic that has run out. If it did not fall, you just had a lucky streak, and nothing is broken.
Cause 1: your best weeks were above average, and averages come back
A viral post pulls your recent average up. The next posts are not worse. They are normal.
In Mydrop's data, the middle half of Instagram posts ran between 1.1% and 6.7% engagement, with a median of 3.1%. A 2% post is a normal post, and a 7% post is a good day. If your three best weeks sat at 6%, a return to 3% is just your baseline showing up.
Write down your median across the last 30 posts. Judge the new weeks against that number.
The 7 causes at a glance
| # | Cause | How to spot it | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Regression to your median | Drop is back to the 30-post median, no lower | Nothing. Reset your expectation |
| 2 | Wrong hour | New low posts cluster at night | Move posts into the audience's daytime |
| 3 | Same format on repeat | One format fills the last 10 posts | Rotate in carousels |
| 4 | Link in the caption | Posts with links trail the rest | Move the link to the bio or a comment |
| 5 | Short captions | Captions are one line | Write two or three sentences |
| 6 | Broken connection | Posts show as published but stats are empty | Reconnect the account |
| 7 | Topic fatigue | Same idea, same angle, for weeks | Give the winner a new angle |
Causes 2 to 5: four settings you control this week
Timing. The day of the week barely matters. In Mydrop's data every day sat within 2% of the median. The hour does: posts published between midnight and 6 am in the account's local time ran 17% below the median across platforms and 36% below on Instagram. If your scheduler runs on one time zone and your audience lives in another, check this first.
Format. In the same data, carousels ran 10% above an account's typical post, while photos and videos sat at the median. If your last ten posts are all single photos, swap three of them for carousels.
Links. A link in the caption cost 7%. Put it in the bio, or reply with it in a comment.
Caption length. Captions under 80 characters ran 9% below the median. From 80 characters up, length made no measurable difference, so you do not need an essay. You need a full sentence or two.
Cause 6: a quiet connection problem
Sometimes the drop is a data problem. An expired platform connection is the most common hard failure we see when publishing: 98.5% of posts in our last 30-day window went live on the first attempt, and the failures mostly came from connections that had expired.
If your reach is zero or missing on several posts in a row, reconnect the account before changing anything in the content.
Cause 7: the topic ran out, so repeat the winner with a new angle
If your top post was a "5 mistakes" list and the next five posts were also "5 mistakes" lists, followers have seen it. Keep the topic and change the angle:
- Same idea as a carousel instead of a photo.
- The same advice for a specific person ("for people who run a one-person shop").
- The opposite view: "when this advice is wrong".
Do not copy the old post. Reuse what it proved, which is that the audience cares about the subject.
Run a 10-post test before you change the whole strategy
Pick the cause that matches your pattern, change only that, and publish ten posts. Then compare the new median to the old one.
If you run several accounts, Mydrop's performance view lines every post up against that account's own median, so the check takes minutes and not an afternoon. Setting posting hours as defaults in the calendar keeps the timing fix in place after you stop thinking about it.
