How LinkedIn text formatting works
Posts are plain text
LinkedIn posts and comments have no bold or italic button; only articles and newsletters do. Styled Unicode letters are how a post gets bold words.
The hook sits above "…see more"
LinkedIn shows about 210 characters on desktop and 140 on phones. A bold first line is the most common use, and the preview shows exactly where it cuts.
Never in your name
LinkedIn's rules ask for a name without special characters, so keep styled letters out of the name field. Posts, comments and the About section are fine.
Example: “Big news” = 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀: 8 characters on LinkedIn, the same as plain text
Checked on October 11, 2026, against LinkedIn's rules and limits.
Reference
Where styled text works on LinkedIn, and where it does not
Every place you might paste styled letters on LinkedIn, and what happens there.
| On LinkedIn | Styled text | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Posts | Works | Bold the hook, not the whole post |
| Comments | Works | Keep it to a word or two |
| About section | Works | Good for short headings |
| Name | Not allowed | LinkedIn asks for no special characters in names |
| Articles and newsletters | Not needed | They have a real bold and italic button |
