How Instagram text formatting works
Captions, comments and bio
Styled letters paste into captions, comments and the bio like any text. They look the same in the feed, on Reels and on your profile.
The first 125 characters
The feed shows about the first 125 characters before "more". A bold first line is the hook people see, and the preview shows where Instagram cuts.
Hashtags stay plain
A hashtag in styled letters is a different word to Instagram, so nobody finds it. Style the words, never the hashtags.
Example: “Big news” = 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀: 8 characters on Instagram
Checked on October 11, 2026, against Instagram's rules and limits.

Every place you might paste styled letters on Instagram, and what happens there.
| On Instagram | Styled text | Good to know |

| Comments | Works | Keep it to a word or two |
| Bio | Works | 150 characters, styled letters included |
| Hashtags | Breaks them | Styled hashtags are not searchable |
| Story text | Use Instagram's own fonts | Stories have built-in text styles |

The counter here counts each styled letter as 1 toward Instagram's 2,200. Instagram does not document its rule, so leave a little room on a caption close to the limit.
It can be. Some screen readers skip styled letters, others spell each one out. Style a few words, never a whole post, and never your name or a link.
