How YouTube text formatting works
Descriptions count bytes
YouTube caps a description at 5,000 bytes, and a styled letter takes 4. A fully styled description fits about 1,250 letters; plain English fits 5,000.
Bold the chapter headings
Styled section titles make a long description easy to scan. Keep timestamps and links in plain characters so YouTube turns them into links.
Titles: use it sparingly
Titles accept any character except < and >, styled letters included, but they hurt search: people type plain words. Keep the keywords plain.
Example: “Big news” = 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀: 8 characters here, 29 of YouTube's 5,000 bytes
Checked on October 11, 2026, against YouTube's rules and limits.

Questions
YouTube text formatting, answered

YouTube accepts it, but searchers type plain words, so a styled keyword is harder to find. Style one word at most, never the keyword.
No. Write timestamps (0:00) and links in plain characters so YouTube turns them into chapters and links.
It can be. Some screen readers skip styled letters, others spell each one out. Style a few words, never a whole post, and never your name or a link.
