From Social Listening to Campaign Brief: A 5-Step Handover

Turn what people say about your brand into a campaign brief in 5 steps: pick signals, find the tension, write the insight, brief the team, measure the lift.

A listening report only becomes a campaign when someone writes the brief. There are five steps: pick your signals, find the tension, write one insight, brief the team, and plan how you'll measure it. Most teams stop after step one and then wonder why nothing changes.

TLDR: Choose two or three signals that keep coming up, find the human tension behind them, write it as one sentence, and drop it into a one-page brief with a measure attached. The brief is the handover.

Dashboards show you what people say. Campaigns need to know why it matters to them and what you'll do about it. Bridging that gap is the whole job.

Step 1: choose two or three signals, not twenty

Look at the last four weeks of mentions, comments and reviews. Keep only the signals that keep appearing, in different words, from different people.

A signal is worth a campaign if it passes three checks:

  • It appears at least 10 times in the period.
  • It relates to something you sell or could say.
  • Competitors are not already owning it.

Our guide to prioritising listening signals that drive revenue shows how to rank them if you have too many.

Step 2: name the tension behind each signal

A signal says "people complain about slow replies." The tension says "they feel ignored by brands that look busy online." Tension is what a campaign can speak to.

For each signal, ask: what does the person want, and what's in the way? Write the answer in a few words each.

Step 3: write one insight sentence

Use this format: "[Audience] want [outcome] but [obstacle], so we will [angle]."

Example: "Small shop owners want to look active online but do not have time, so we will show a 15-minute weekly routine."

If it takes more than one sentence, you have two campaigns. Split them.

Step 4: put it in a one-page brief

Brief section What goes in
Insight The sentence from step 3
Evidence 3 real quotes (anonymised) and the count
Audience Who, and which channels they use
Message The one thing to say, with a tone note
Formats Posts, short videos, replies, stories
Measure One number you will compare to last month

Keep it on one page. The creative team should read it in two minutes and start.

AI can speed up the first draft. Mydrop's monitoring gathers mentions and keywords in one place, and AI post ideas can turn the insight into a first batch of concepts to react to.

Step 5: plan the measure before launch

Pick one metric tied to the signal. If the signal was "slow replies," the measure might be median reply time or the share of comments answered in 24 hours. Compare it to the four weeks before the campaign.

For engagement targets, Mydrop's data puts the median Instagram post at 3.1%, with the middle half between 1.1% and 6.7%. Use that range to judge whether a result is ordinary or strong.

Keep the loop alive after launch

Review the same signals two weeks after the campaign starts. If the volume dropped, or the tone shifted, you have an answer. If it did not, the insight needs rewriting, not the creative.

Put the brief, the posts and the review dates in one calendar so the campaign has a visible owner and end date.

Mistakes that turn a good insight into a flat campaign

Briefing the topic instead of the tension. "Customer service" is a topic. "Customers feel ignored by brands that look busy" is a tension. Creatives can only make something sharp from the second.

Using one quote as proof. A single dramatic comment is a story. Ten similar ones are evidence. Always show the count next to the quotes.

Launching without an end date. Set a review date in the brief. Without it the campaign drifts and no one decides whether it worked.

Write the first brief this week

  1. Pull four weeks of mentions.
  2. Pick two signals.
  3. Write the insight sentence and the one-page brief.
  4. Share it with creative before Friday.

One brief written is worth more than a month of dashboards watched.

FAQ

Quick answers

Pick the 2 or 3 strongest signals, name the tension behind them, write a one-sentence insight, and put that in a brief. The brief, not the dashboard, is what moves the campaign forward.

Two to four weeks of mentions and comments across your channels is enough to spot patterns. Fewer than 30 relevant mentions means widen your search terms.

One named person on the social team, who writes the brief and walks the creative lead through it. Without an owner the report sits in a folder.

Next step

Stop coordinating around the work

If your team spends more time chasing approvals, assets, and publish details than creating better posts, the problem is probably not your people. It is the workflow around them. Mydrop brings planning, review, scheduling, and performance into one calmer operating system.
