Content Reuse ROI: A 4-Line Formula for Multi-Brand Social Teams

Work out what content reuse earns you: hours saved, production spend avoided and reach gained, minus adaptation time and tools. Formula plus a data checklist.

Content reuse ROI is (hours saved + production spend avoided + value of extra reach, minus adaptation time and tool cost) divided by that cost. Four lines of arithmetic, built from numbers you already have in your calendar and your invoices. This post shows where each input comes from and which ones to trust.

TLDR: Count reuse in hours and invoices first, because those are the numbers finance accepts. Add reach only as a separate, labelled line. If a reused post performs worse than your median, it is not saving you anything.

The four lines of the reuse ROI sheet

Put these on one sheet, one row per brand or per campaign.

Line What it holds Where the number comes from
1. Hours saved (Hours to make the asset new) minus (hours to adapt it), times the number of reuses Time tracking, or a quick estimate from the team
2. Spend avoided Shoot, design or freelancer cost you did not pay again Invoices from the original asset
3. Extra reach Impressions from reused posts that would not exist otherwise Your analytics, reused posts only
4. Cost of reuse Adaptation time, review time, tool cost Same time sheet, plus your subscriptions

ROI is lines 1 to 3 minus line 4, divided by line 4. Keep line 3 in its own column so a sceptical reader can delete it and still see a positive result.

Put a price on an hour before you start

Use a loaded hourly rate: salary or freelancer fee plus the overhead you would pay anyway. If you do not know it, ask finance for one number and use it for every brand. Changing the rate between brands makes the comparison useless.

Be strict about what counts as "to make it new". A video that took a designer six hours counts six hours. Adapting it to three aspect ratios and two captions might take 90 minutes. The gap is your saving, and it repeats every time the asset is reused.

Count only reuse that was approved and published

Reuse that sits in a folder saves nothing. Count an asset when it was adapted, approved and published at least once more. Everything else is potential, and potential is not ROI.

This is also where multi-brand teams lose the most. If a regional team cannot find the master asset, they rebuild it, and your reuse rate stays flat while your costs rise. A shared library with brand-level folders matters here, which is why a searchable asset library usually comes before any ROI project.

Check the reused posts against your own median

A cheap copy of a weak post is still weak. Compare reused posts with new posts from the same account, over the same weeks, on the same platform.

Result What it means What to do
Reused posts at or above your median The asset travels well Reuse it again, and fix the next format
Reused posts clearly below median The format does not fit the channel Adapt harder, or stop reusing this type
Mixed, depends on platform The asset fits some channels Reuse only on the ones that work

In Mydrop's September 2026 data, the middle half of Instagram posts sat between 1.1% and 6.7% engagement. That spread is wide, so compare against the same account's median and not against a benchmark from someone else's feed.

Where the hours actually disappear

Most of the saving is not in the clever repurposing. It is in the boring steps around it: resizing, rewriting the same caption for six channels, re-uploading, and chasing approval again. Cutting those is what makes line 1 large.

Mydrop helps with exactly that part. You can bulk-create posts from one asset, keep each brand's profiles apart in Brands, and read the results in the performance view to compare reused and new posts side by side.

Reach is a bonus line, so label it as one

Extra reach is real, but it is the easiest line to inflate. Do not claim reach that you would have had anyway from a new post. If the question from finance is "what did we save?", answer with lines 1, 2 and 4. If the question is "what did we gain?", show line 3 separately, with the posts listed.

Run the sheet on last month's posts

Pick one brand and last month's published posts. Mark which started from an existing asset. Fill the four lines, compare reused with new posts on engagement, and write down the one number you would defend in a budget meeting. Then repeat for a second brand. If you want the posts, assets and results in one place, start free with Mydrop and run the sheet from there.

FAQ

Quick answers

Add the hours saved (valued at your loaded hourly rate), the production spend you avoided and the value of extra reach, then subtract the adaptation time and tool cost. Divide the result by that cost.

There is no universal target. Measure your own share of published posts that started from an existing asset, then raise it only where reused posts perform at or above your median.

Only if your attribution already links posts to sales. Most teams get a defensible number from time saved and production spend avoided, and treat reach as a bonus.

Next step

Stop coordinating around the work

If your team spends more time chasing approvals, assets, and publish details than creating better posts, the problem is probably not your people. It is the workflow around them. Mydrop brings planning, review, scheduling, and performance into one calmer operating system.

Managing 14+ social platforms felt like a 2 a.m. nightmare until Mydrop. The AI brand-voice mapping is scary accurate, and the client approval portal saved me easily 15 hours this week alone. It's the ultimate set-and-forget workspace for busy agencies.
A true automation tool for scheduling (and creating) social media content! It has saved me over 20 hours of work already in just my first couple weeks. A true game-changer for anyone in business, big or small!
Finally tried Mydrop on a test client and the white-label portal on a custom domain actually looks legit, no Mydrop branding sneaking in. The OAuth setup saved me from the usual “what's my password” back-and-forth.
