Agorapulse, Sprout Social and Mydrop can all automate some of your replies. So the question isn't "which one has automation" but which one handles your own messages correctly, and costs less as your team grows. The only way to know is to run the same seven tests on each tool, using your real inbox.
TLDR: Test rule setup, keyword matching, hybrid approval, escalation, tagging, audit trail and billing in a one-day trial per tool. Automate the predictable questions, send risky messages to a person, and check the pricing basis (per seat, per user or flat) before you add teammates.
Mydrop pricing check, September 2026: the entry paid plans of the eight tools most often compared with Mydrop run from $6 per channel (Buffer) and $25 a month (Later) to $99 per user (Hootsuite) and $79 per seat (Sprout Social), read on each vendor's pricing page. Mydrop is free to start, then $19 a month flat, not per seat. Full table on Mydrop's compare pages.
Seven tests to run in each trial
| # | Test | What a pass looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Build a keyword rule in under five minutes | The rule is saved and fires on a test comment |
| 2 | Send "how much?", "do you ship to Canada?", "refund" | The first two get answered, the third goes to a person |
| 3 | Run in draft mode first | A person can approve before the reply goes out |
| 4 | Post a rude comment | It gets flagged or tagged, not answered by a bot |
| 5 | Tag and assign a lead | The right teammate sees it within a minute |
| 6 | Find out what the rule did last week | An action log shows what was sent and why |
| 7 | Add a fifth teammate | You know exactly what it does to the bill |
Run all seven with your real comments. A vendor's demo inbox is clean. Yours isn't.
Which replies to automate, by message type
| Message type | Automate? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| "Where are you based?", opening hours, shipping | Yes | Same answer every time |
| "How much does it cost?" | Yes, with a link | Predictable, and the link does the work |
| Praise and thank-yous | Yes, but vary the wording | Identical replies look robotic |
| Complaints, refunds, delays | No, route to a person | Tone matters more than speed |
| Threats, harassment | No, escalate immediately | Needs a human decision |
| Possible leads | Tag and notify | A person closes the sale |
What each tool asks you to compare
Agorapulse and Sprout Social both include a shared inbox and rule-based features. Their feature pages and plan tiers change, so check them against your seven tests rather than trusting a summary written months ago.
What doesn't change quickly is the billing basis. Sprout Social bills per seat and Agorapulse per user. Mydrop is flat. See the price check above for the entry figures: the cost gap comes from how many people are in the inbox. For each tool's trade-offs, read the longer guides on Sprout Social alternatives and Agorapulse alternatives.
How Mydrop handles the seven tests
Mydrop's social inbox uses auto-reply rules. You match keywords ("price", "booking", "refund") as contains-any, contains-all or exact match, with exclusions. The rule can send an AI reply, use a saved template, add a tag, notify someone or assign the thread.
You pick the mode for each rule: fully automatic, manual or hybrid approval, with cooldowns so the account doesn't repeat itself, and every action is logged. Comment moderation reads incoming messages and sorts them into risk categories such as spam, harassment, threats and angry customers, so the worst ones rise to the top. More on social media automations. Trigger-word replies are covered in our trigger-word tools comparison.
Start with three rules, not thirty
A new rule set fails when it's too clever. Start with one rule for shipping or hours, one for price questions with a link, and one that tags every message containing "refund" or "cancel" and notifies a person. Run them in hybrid mode for a week and read the log.
Then promote one rule at a time to automatic.
Next step: export a week of real comments and DMs and write the seven tests on one sheet. Run them in each tool you're considering, and start free with Mydrop if you want the third column.
