When a social profile disconnects, the cause is almost always one of seven things: an expired token, a changed password, a lost admin role, missing permissions, a changed account type, a security check, or a problem on the platform's side. Work through them in this order before you keep clicking reconnect.
TLDR: Check who connected the profile and whether they still have admin rights, then look for a password change or a security prompt, then reconnect and accept every permission. In Mydrop's data on posts published through the tool in the 30 days to 16 September 2026, the most common hard failure was an expired platform connection.
The 7 checks, in order
| # | Cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Token expired | The disconnect happened weeks after you connected. Nothing else changed | Reconnect the profile |
| 2 | Password changed or security reset | Someone changed the login or removed devices | Reconnect and approve the login again |
| 3 | The person who connected it lost admin rights | Check the Page or Business role of whoever connected it | Reconnect with someone who has admin rights |
| 4 | Permissions left unticked | The reconnect screen shows only a partial list of permissions | Reconnect and accept every permission |
| 5 | Account type or link changed | Instagram moved to personal, or is no longer linked to its Facebook Page | Restore the account type and link, then reconnect |
| 6 | Login or security challenge | The platform asks for a code or a confirmation on its own site | Complete the challenge, then reconnect |
| 7 | Problem on the platform's side | Several profiles fail at once, or the platform's status page reports an issue | Wait, then try again later |
Checks 1 to 3: the usual suspects
Most disconnects come down to time or people. Access tokens don't last forever, and some platforms ask you to re-authorise every few months. That's normal, and it's exactly why this failure is so common. Reconnect and make a note of the date.
Next, ask what changed in the last week. A password reset, a new two-step login setup or a team member leaving who held the admin role will all end the connection. If the person who connected the profile has left, the connection can die with their access.
Checks 4 and 5: permissions and account setup
If you reconnect and the profile connects but posts still fail, look at the permission screen. Platforms let you untick items during authorisation, and a missing one can block publishing or reading analytics. Reconnect and accept all of them.
For Instagram, confirm the account is a professional account and linked to the right Facebook Page. If that link has changed, publishing tools lose access.
Checks 6 and 7: security prompts and outages
A login challenge can sit on the platform's own site or app, and you won't see it in your scheduler. Log in to the platform directly and clear any prompt.
If several profiles fail at once, suspect the platform. Check its status page and wait before reconnecting everything. Repeated reconnect attempts during an outage only waste time.
After you reconnect
Don't assume it worked. Do these three things:
- Check the calendar. Confirm your queued posts are still attached to the right profile.
- Publish one test post on a low-risk profile and watch it go live.
- Write down who connected it and when. This one note saves the next investigation.
Stop it from happening again
- Use roles, not people. Connect profiles through someone who is unlikely to leave, and keep at least two admins on each Page or account.
- Keep a connection list with the profile, the person who connected it and the date.
- Review it monthly. An agency running ten brands should look at it before the busy season.
Mydrop's workspaces keep each brand's profiles and roles separate, so you can see at a glance who is responsible. For the full setup, read how to import multi-brand profiles with OAuth.
Next step: open your profile list, find any profile connected by someone who has left or changed roles, and reconnect it with a current admin today. For many brands in one place, start free with Mydrop.
