Posting Frequency vs Growth (2026): 3 Metrics to Track Instead

More posts don't mean more growth. Track engagement rate, saves and shares per post, and follower growth per post to see what really works.

TLDR: Posting hourly doesn't predict growth. Three numbers per post do: engagement rate, saves plus shares, and new followers per post. Track them weekly, compare them to your own median, and post only as often as those numbers hold steady.

Mydrop data, September 2026: across accounts connected to Mydrop with at least 8 posts, accounts posting less than once a week had a median engagement rate of 7.0%, 1 to 3 posts a week 3.1%, 3 to 7 a week 1.5%, and 7 or more 0.7%. That's a correlation, not a cause: smaller accounts post less and carry higher rates. Method in the Mydrop social media benchmarks.

If you've ever added a fourth post a day and watched reach drop, you've seen the problem. Volume is something you control, so it feels like progress. But the platform doesn't reward effort. It rewards what people do with the post.

Mydrop's September 2026 data points the same way. On accounts with at least 8 posts, the median engagement rate was 7.0% for accounts posting under once a week, 3.1% for 1 to 3 posts a week, 1.5% for 3 to 7 and 0.7% for 7 or more. That's a correlation, not a cause, because smaller accounts post less and carry higher rates. But it does show that posting more doesn't lift each post.

Metric 1: engagement rate per post, against your own median

Engagement rate is interactions divided by reach or followers (pick one and stick with it). The number only means something against your own history.

For a rough scale, in Mydrop's data, the median engagement rate was 3.1% on Instagram, 3.0% on TikTok and 1.1% on Facebook. The middle half of Instagram posts ran between 1.1% and 6.7%, so a 2% post is normal and a 7% post is a good day.

How to use it: work out your median over the last 20 posts. Flag the posts above and below it. Look at what the top three have in common.

Metric 2: saves plus shares per post

Likes are cheap. Saves and shares need a reason. They tell you the post was useful or worth passing on, and they're the actions most likely to put your content in front of new people.

How to use it: add saves and shares for each post and divide by reach. Compare formats. In the same data, carousels ran 10% above an account's typical post, while a link in the caption cost 7%. See the benchmarks for the method.

Metric 3: new followers per post

If growth is the goal, measure it per post, not per month. Take followers gained on the day of a post and the next two days, then divide by the posts you published in that window. It's imperfect, but it shows which content brings strangers in.

If you posted three times in a week and gained 30 followers, that's 10 per post. If you posted eight times and gained 36, that's 4.5 per post. The second week was a lot more work for a worse return.

Use a three-column check every Friday

Metric This week Your 20-post median Verdict
Engagement rate Up, flat or down
Saves plus shares per reach Up, flat or down
New followers per post Up, flat or down

If two of the three fall when you raise frequency, drop back. If they hold, you have room to post more.

Fix timing and format before you add volume

Two cheap changes beat extra posts. In our data, weekday made almost no difference (every day sat within 2% of the median), but posting between midnight and 6 am was 17% below the median. Avoid that window. Then try a carousel in place of a single photo. For more, see why best time to post is a vanity metric.

Ignore these numbers for now

Follower count, impressions and posts per day feel good and predict little. Impressions rise when you post more, even if nobody cares. Followers can be bought or inflated by a giveaway. If a number goes up without a change in saves, shares or conversations, treat it as noise until the three metrics above agree.

Let the tool do the counting

Hand-tracking three metrics across four platforms is where most plans stall. Mydrop's performance analytics shows native metrics per platform, and scheduled reports can send the weekly check to you or a client. If you work alone, the solo manager metrics plan is a good companion.

Run a two-week frequency test

Keep your usual posting rate for two weeks and record the three metrics. Then change the rate by one post a week for two more weeks. Compare the Friday tables. Start with Mydrop free if you want the numbers pulled together for you.

FAQ

Quick answers

Most accounts do well with 1 to 3 posts a week on a channel, as long as each post is good. Only post more if your engagement rate per post holds up as you add posts.

In Mydrop's data, the median Instagram post had a 3.1% engagement rate, and the middle half ran between 1.1% and 6.7%.

They're usually stronger signals because they take more effort. A save means someone wants to come back, and a share means they put their name on it.

Next step

Stop coordinating around the work

If your team spends more time chasing approvals, assets, and publish details than creating better posts, the problem is probably not your people. It is the workflow around them. Mydrop brings planning, review, scheduling, and performance into one calmer operating system.

Managing 14+ social platforms felt like a 2 a.m. nightmare until Mydrop. The AI brand-voice mapping is scary accurate, and the client approval portal saved me easily 15 hours this week alone. It's the ultimate set-and-forget workspace for busy agencies.
A true automation tool for scheduling (and creating) social media content! It has saved me over 20 hours of work already in just my first couple weeks. A true game-changer for anyone in business, big or small!
Finally tried Mydrop on a test client and the white-label portal on a custom domain actually looks legit, no Mydrop branding sneaking in. The OAuth setup saved me from the usual “what's my password” back-and-forth.
