You can't count brand equity directly, but you can track five signals that move with it and check them every quarter. Branded search, direct traffic, share of voice, sentiment and audience quality each have a source you can pull today.
TLDR: Pick a baseline quarter, then track branded search, direct traffic, share of voice, sentiment and the share of followers who match your buyer. If three of the five rise over two quarters while you post consistently, social is helping the brand.
Brand equity is the extra preference people have for you over a plain alternative. It shows up when someone searches your name, types your URL, or picks you at the same price. Social media can feed it, but a like is not the same as preference.
Why reach and followers do not answer the question
Reach says how many people saw a post. Followers say how many once pressed a button. Neither says whether anybody would pick you. In Mydrop's September 2026 data, the median Instagram engagement rate was 3.1%, with the middle half of posts between 1.1% and 6.7%. That spread is the daily noise of a post, not a read on the brand.
So use post metrics for post decisions. Use the five signals below for brand decisions.
The five signals, where to find them and how to read them
| Signal | Where it lives | A healthy move |
|---|---|---|
| Branded search | Search Console, branded queries | Rising over two quarters |
| Direct and branded traffic | Web analytics, direct channel | Rising, with stable bounce |
| Share of voice | A monitoring tool, mentions vs 3 competitors | Your share of mentions grows |
| Sentiment | Comment and mention review | Positive share steady or up |
| Audience quality | Follower demographics vs your buyer | More followers who match |
Take the first reading in a quarter you call the baseline. Do not change what you track after that.
Branded search is the cleanest signal you have
Search Console lets you filter queries that contain your brand name. If social is doing its job, more people type your name after seeing you. Compare the same quarter year on year when you can, to cut out seasonality.
Direct traffic works the same way, with a caveat: it also holds untagged links and dark social. Treat it as a trend line, not a count.
Share of voice needs a short competitor list
Pick three competitors. Count mentions of each brand across the platforms and the web for the quarter. Your share is your mentions divided by the total. You are looking for the trend, not the exact figure. A monitoring tool can count mentions and keywords across platforms so you are not tallying by hand.
Sentiment: read the words, not the score
Automated sentiment is a start. Then read 50 comments and mentions by hand each quarter and sort them into positive, neutral and negative. Write down the top three reasons behind the negative ones. That list is more useful than any score.
A warning from our side: high reach with falling sentiment is a real pattern, and it is covered in the sentiment delta audit.
Audience quality: more of the right followers
Check the demographic breakdown of your followers against your buyer profile: region, age band, and, on LinkedIn, seniority. If total followers grow while the share who match your buyer shrinks, you are buying reach that will never convert. Platform analytics show the breakdowns, and Mydrop's analytics bring them together across profiles with a multi-profile benchmark.
Build one quarterly brand page
Put the five signals on one page: this quarter, last quarter, change, and one sentence of reading. Keep it to a single screen. Add a line on how consistent the brand looked across channels, using a short brand consistency dashboard if you run several brands.
Schedule it as a white-label report so it arrives every quarter with no rebuild. See the best reporting tools if you are choosing one.
Record your baseline this week
Pull branded search clicks for the last 90 days, direct sessions, mention counts for you and three competitors, and the audience breakdown for your main channel. Put the four numbers and your first 50 comment reads in one sheet. That is the baseline for the next two quarters. To track them without the manual pulls, start free with Mydrop.
