Organic vs Paid Social (2026): Which Gives Better ROI per Post

Decide post by post: keep it organic, boost it, or run it as an ad. A four-question rule, a comparison table and the numbers to track for each route.

Use organic when the post builds trust or attention and nobody needs it by a set date. Use paid when you need a specific result by a specific day. Only boost an organic post once it has proved itself by beating your median.

TLDR: Ask four questions per post: is there a deadline, is there a measurable action, did it already beat your median, and can your existing audience reach the people you need. Then choose organic, boost or ad. Track cost per result for all three, and count staff time on the organic side.

Mydrop pricing check, September 2026: the entry paid plans of the eight tools most often compared with Mydrop run from $6 per channel (Buffer) and $25 a month (Later) to $99 per user (Hootsuite) and $79 per seat (Sprout Social), read on each vendor's pricing page. Mydrop is free to start, then $19 a month flat, not per seat. Full table on Mydrop's compare pages.

The four questions that pick the route

  1. Is there a deadline? A sale ending Friday cannot wait for the algorithm. That one is paid.
  2. Is there a measurable action? A signup, a booking, a purchase. Without one, you cannot work out ROI, so keep it organic and judge it on engagement.
  3. Did it already beat your median? If yes, it is a boost candidate. If it is below median, fix it before you spend.
  4. Can your existing audience do the job? If the people you need already follow you, organic is enough. If they do not, only paid reaches them.

Organic, boost or ad: what each one costs and returns

Organic Boosted post Dedicated ad
Best for Trust, community, search Proven posts with a next step Launches, sales, new audiences
Cash cost None Low, per post Medium to high
Hidden cost Staff time Staff time plus spend Creative, targeting, testing
Speed Weeks Days Hours
Predictable? No Mostly Yes
Judge it by Engagement vs your median Cost per click or lead Cost per sale or lead

Work out ROI the same way on both sides

The classic mistake is calling organic "free". An hour of a social manager's time has a cost. Write it down.

Organic cost = hours spent on the post x your hourly cost. Paid cost = ad spend + the same hours. ROI = (value of results - cost) / cost.

Use the same result for both, such as qualified leads or purchases tracked by a UTM link. When a result is not trackable, the comparison is guesswork. Fix tracking first. A link-in-bio page with its own click counts gives you at least one clean number.

Use your median as the gate for boosting

A post is worth boosting when it beats what is normal for your account, not a generic benchmark. In Mydrop's data, the median Instagram engagement rate was 3.1% and the middle half of posts ran between 1.1% and 6.7%. Your own median matters more than that, but the shape holds: a post in the top quarter of your range is the one to back.

Boosting a post at your median buys more average results. Boosting one above it buys more of something that already works.

Three cases where the answer is not obvious

  • A great post with no next step. It has strong engagement but nothing to buy. Keep it organic. Paying to show it adds reach, not revenue.
  • A weak post with a big offer. The offer is the asset, so rebuild the creative as a proper ad rather than boosting the weak post.
  • A new market with no followers. Organic cannot reach people who do not know you yet. A small paid test is the only way to find out if the market responds.

Run a 30-day split test before changing the budget

Pick ten posts that share one goal. Run five organic. Run the other five with the same small boost. Record cost per result for each group, including time. After 30 days you will know whether paid beats your organic on your goal, which no benchmark can tell you. Keep the numbers in one place. Mydrop's analytics show performance by post and platform, so you can tag which were boosted and compare. For the habit behind this, see the 10-minute engagement to ROI audit.

Decide on one live post this week

Take next week's best-planned post. Answer the four questions above, write down the route you picked and the result you expect, and check it after seven days. Plan and schedule it free with Mydrop.

FAQ

Quick answers

Neither wins in general. Organic is cheaper per post but slow and uncertain. Paid is predictable but stops when the budget stops. Judge each post by the job it has to do.

Boost posts that already beat your median engagement and carry a clear next step, such as an offer or a signup. Boosting a weak post only pays to show it to more people.

Count staff time for organic and add ad spend for paid. Then divide by the same outcome, such as leads or sales, for both.

Next step

Stop coordinating around the work

If your team spends more time chasing approvals, assets, and publish details than creating better posts, the problem is probably not your people. It is the workflow around them. Mydrop brings planning, review, scheduling, and performance into one calmer operating system.

Managing 14+ social platforms felt like a 2 a.m. nightmare until Mydrop. The AI brand-voice mapping is scary accurate, and the client approval portal saved me easily 15 hours this week alone. It's the ultimate set-and-forget workspace for busy agencies.
A true automation tool for scheduling (and creating) social media content! It has saved me over 20 hours of work already in just my first couple weeks. A true game-changer for anyone in business, big or small!
Finally tried Mydrop on a test client and the white-label portal on a custom domain actually looks legit, no Mydrop branding sneaking in. The OAuth setup saved me from the usual “what's my password” back-and-forth.
