You can turn Instagram followers into an email list without a website by sending them to a signup form on a link-in-bio page or a hosted landing page. All you need is one offer, one form, and three ways of pointing people at it: your bio, your Stories, and a comment-to-DM keyword. Here are the four setups, from easiest to most automated.
TLDR: Pick one free offer (a checklist, a template, a discount code), put a signup form on a link-in-bio page, then promote it in your bio, Stories and a keyword comment. Never add followers to a list without an opt-in. In Mydrop's data, a link in the caption cost 7% in engagement, so send people to the bio or a DM, not the caption.
Step 1: pick an offer worth an email address
People give an email for something specific, not for "updates". Pick one that answers a question your posts already get:
- a one-page checklist or cheat sheet,
- a template (a content calendar, a price sheet, a brief),
- a first-order discount or a free sample,
- a short weekly tip with a clear promise ("one Reel idea every Friday").
State the promise on the form in one sentence, and say how often you will write.
Four ways to collect the emails
| Setup | What you need | Best for | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Signup form on a link-in-bio page | A bio page with an email block | Everyone, as the base | Low |
| 2. Hosted landing page from your email tool | An account with an email service that offers a free hosted page | Creators who already use one | Low |
| 3. Comment-to-DM keyword | An Instagram professional account and a DM automation | Posts that already get comments | Medium |
| 4. Stories with a link sticker | A link-in-bio or landing page URL | Warm followers who watch Stories | Low |
1. A link-in-bio page with a signup form
This is the most direct route. Your bio has one clickable link, so make it a page with the offer on top and a form under it.
In Mydrop's link-in-bio, a page can include an email capture block with validation, and you can see captured emails and capture analytics in the editor. Add UTM parameters to the buttons and you also see which post sent the signup. Our guide to building a link-in-bio page that converts leads covers the layout.
2. A hosted landing page from your email tool
Most email services offer a free hosted signup page. Paste its link in your bio. The trade-off: you get a page, but not the combined view of clicks, sources and posts you get from a bio page you control.
3. A comment-to-DM keyword
Tell people in the caption: "Comment GUIDE and I will send it." A rule then sends a DM with the link to your signup page or the file itself.
With trigger words in Mydrop, you create one rule for the keyword on your Instagram professional account and turn on Send a DM. Instagram allows one DM per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment, and Mydrop follows both limits. Keep the DM short and put the signup link in it, rather than attaching the file directly, so you collect the email first.
4. Stories with a link sticker
Put the offer in a Story with a clear instruction: "Tap the link, get the checklist." Stories reach followers who already pay attention, so this tends to be a warm audience. Save the best Story to a Highlight called "Free guide" so it stays visible.
Do not put the link in the caption
Instagram posts do not make caption links clickable, and in Mydrop's data, a link in the caption cost 7% in engagement. Write "link in bio" or use a keyword comment instead.
Make the opt-in clean
- Say what they get and how often. One line above the form.
- Use a checkbox or clear wording that the email is for your list.
- Send the offer straight away, then a welcome email within a day.
- Keep it separate from followers. Someone who follows you has not agreed to be emailed.
What to measure
Track three numbers for four weeks: bio link clicks, signups, and the share of clicks that sign up. If clicks are high and signups low, the offer or the form is the problem. If clicks are low, the posts are not asking clearly enough.
Next step: write the offer in one sentence today, build the form on a bio page, and add one "Comment GUIDE" call to action to your next post. You can set up the bio page and the keyword rule free at app.mydropai.com.
