Most post regret comes from five errors you can spot in advance: a broken link, a caption over the platform limit, the wrong media, a preview that looks off and an account connection that has expired. Spend one minute on each before you schedule, and you'll catch most of them.
TLDR: Check the link, caption limit, media, preview and connection, one minute each. In Mydrop's data, 98.5% of posts went live at the first attempt, and the most common hard failure was an expired platform connection, so the connection check is the one people skip.
Mydrop data, September 2026: in the 30 days to 16 September 2026, 98.5% of posts published through Mydrop went live at the first attempt. The most common warning was a YouTube custom thumbnail rejected because the channel was not phone-verified; the most common hard failure was an expired platform connection. Method in the Mydrop social media benchmarks.
Minute 1: click the link from the post, not from your notes
Open the link in a private window, from the actual draft. Check that it lands on the right page, loads on a phone and keeps your tracking tag. A link that works in your editor can still fail if it was pasted with a trailing space or an old version.
If a link in the caption isn't essential, drop it. In Mydrop's data, a link in the caption ran 7% below the account's typical post.
Minute 2: count the caption against the real limit
The limit in the app isn't always the limit at send time. The caps a scheduler enforces:
| Platform | Limit to respect |
|---|---|
| 2,200 characters, 5 hashtags | |
| TikTok | 2,200 characters, hashtags count inside |
| X | 280 weighted characters |
| Bluesky | 300 characters |
| Pinterest alt text | 500 characters |
A caption the app accepted while you typed can still be rejected when the post goes out. Leave a small margin.
Also read the first line out loud. If it starts with a typo, the rest doesn't matter.
Minute 3: look at the media on the final version
Check three things: the image isn't cropped in a way that cuts a face or text, the video has the right sound and the right first frame, and any alt text is filled in. Open the file itself, not the thumbnail in a folder.
Minute 4: preview every platform, not just one
The same post can look different on each network. A long first line gets cut at "more" on one and shown in full on another. Mydrop's per-platform post preview shows how each version will appear before it goes out, so you don't find the problem by looking at the live post.
Minute 5: confirm the account connection is alive
This is the check people skip. In our data, an expired platform connection was the most common hard failure, and a YouTube custom thumbnail rejected for an unverified channel was the most common warning.
Open the account list and look for any account marked as needing reconnection. Fix it now, not at 9 am when the post is due. If you manage many accounts, set a weekly reminder to reconnect.
Make it a habit by attaching it to a single moment
A checklist you remember to use is a checklist that works. Attach it to one moment: the click on "schedule". Do the five checks right before. For a batch, check the first post on each platform in full and spot-check the rest.
If you work with clients, put the same five checks at the top of the approval request so they know what has already been verified. Mydrop's approvals let reviewers see the preview and comments in the same place.
For a longer version with 22 checks, see the pre-publish checklist for solo managers. For tools that run these checks for you, see 6 best pre-publish validation tools.
Next step: copy the five checks into a note and run them on your next post. If you want the previews, approvals and scheduling in one tool, start free with Mydrop.
